Biking in Hurghada usually means quad biking, and the booking sites reflect that. On GetYourGuide, every Hurghada and El Gouna listing with "bike" in it is motorised: a quad bike (an ATV), or a motocross (MX) bike. We found no guided bicycle, e-bike or mountain-bike tour on the platform for the Red Sea coast around Hurghada, and no operator running guided mountain-bike rides into the desert.

So this page does two jobs. First, it explains quad biking, which is what most visitors mean when they book a "bike tour" here. Second, it is honest about pedal cycling: where you can rent a bicycle, where it is pleasant to ride, and how to stay safe on Egyptian roads.

Hurghada biking: what a "bike tour" means here

Check the listing for the words "bicycle" or "cycling" before you book anything called a bike tour. In Hurghada, "quad bike tour" and "ATV tour" mean the same thing: a four-wheeled motorbike you sit astride and steer with handlebars, ridden in a guided convoy across the desert. "MX bike" means a two-wheeled motocross bike, ridden on a track.

The one guided bicycle tour we found is the El Gouna City Bike Tour, sold by the agency Egyptra Travel through a reseller site: about 3 hours around El Gouna's lagoons, Abu Tig Marina and its architecture on bike-friendly paths, with hotel pick-up from Hurghada, Makadi or Soma Bay and bottled water. Children under 12 ride with an adult, the tour is in English, and no price is published. Ask the agency directly for the price and for the next date it runs.

Everything else is either a quad trip or a rental you organise yourself.

Quad biking in Hurghada: the motorised bike tour

Quad biking is Hurghada's most popular desert trip. A minibus collects you from your hotel and drives you to a safari station. Most stations are in Safari Land, a strip of stations on the Safaga road past the airport. You get a briefing and a short test lap (ask for a helmet and wear it), then ride in convoy behind a guide to a Bedouin-style camp for tea and a short camel ride, and back.

The key fact: the trip lasts 2–5 hours, but the riding is usually 40–60 minutes on a group quad, up to about 90 on longer trips. A listing's duration is door to door, so ask how many minutes you spend on the quad, not how many hours the trip lasts. Scorpion Safari's own morning tour, for example, gives 30 minutes on the quad and 15 in a buggy inside 3 hours.

The rules are simple. The driver must be 16 or over, and most trips ask for no driving licence, just a short test drive. You will sign a waiver. Under-16s can sometimes ride behind a parent on a double quad, depending on the seller. Our quad tours guide explains every step, and quad trips by length sorts the listings by how much riding you get.

Our pick for a short, well-rated first ride is the Makadi Bay ATV tour: a 2-hour trip including transfers, rated 4.7 from over 3,000 reviews, from about $17. Its 2 hours include the drive, so the riding part is short; it suits guests in Makadi and Sahl Hasheesh best. For a longer afternoon, the desert quad with camel ride and optional BBQ is the most-reviewed quad listing in Hurghada, rated 4.9, from about $29. If you want footage of yourself, the quad and camel ride with optional GoPro sells the camera as a paid add-on; its description talks of about two hours on the quad.

Dirt biking and motocross in El Gouna

For dirt biking near Hurghada, the place is Motoclub in El Gouna, listed on El Gouna's official site as "Moto Club". It calls itself the first MX and ATV track in Egypt; that is the operator's own claim. The 90,000 m² site on the south-west edge of town has two tracks: an Easy Ride circuit of 1.2 km (about a 3-minute lap) and an MX track of 1.8 km (about 4 minutes). The track hosted the 4th El Gouna International Motocross Championship on 2–3 April 2021.

Motoclub sells private rides only, for solo riders, couples or your own group: track sessions, private desert quad rides and jeep trips. It opens from sunrise to sunset, books by WhatsApp and publishes no prices. Details are on motoclubegypt.com and El Gouna's motorsport page.

On GetYourGuide, the El Gouna motocross listings use the same wording as Motoclub's site. The private motocross track experience is from about $71; the El Gouna quad and MX bike safari is from about $135. These are private, premium products, not dearer versions of a group quad. If you are staying in El Gouna and just want a cheap group ride, expect a 40–60-minute drive south to a Hurghada station instead. Our El Gouna page compares the options.

Bike rental in Hurghada and El Gouna

Bicycle rental exists, but it is patchy. Don't assume your hotel has bikes; ask at reception, and expect to search a little. Here is what we could find:

Where What Status
Soma Bay: Hopper Bikes, electric bikes, golf carts and scooters for rent inside the resort, 09:00–17:00; no prices published Listed on Soma Bay's official site
El Gouna: Baddel Bike-share stations, including e-bikes, were reported in El Gouna; the app also offers dock-free bikes Check the app before relying on it
El Gouna: Crystal Bike Bicycle rental and shop in Downtown El Gouna Listed, not confirmed; no working website
El Gouna: iRide Motor scooters at EGP 2,400 a day and golf carts No bicycles
Hurghada town A bike shop appears on maps in south Hurghada; no rental with published prices Ask locally

For a rough idea of prices, one rental comparison site quotes about EGP 150 a day for a standard bike in low season, EGP 250–350 in high season, and EGP 400–600 for an e-bike. Treat those as a guide, not a quote. Expect to leave an ID or a deposit.

Soma Bay is the easiest place to cycle on holiday: Hopper rents bikes and e-bikes inside the resort, and you stay on resort roads. See our Soma Bay page for the desert trips from there.

None of the rental sources mentions helmets for bicycles. Bring your own if you plan to ride more than a few gentle kilometres.

Where to cycle in Hurghada, El Gouna and Soma Bay

  • Hurghada's northern walkway. The tourist walkway north of the city, towards El Gouna, runs 8 km and includes a path for bicycles and walkers (Egypt Independent report). It is the only car-free cycling in Hurghada itself.
  • El Gouna's lagoons. A popular route on Komoot, "View of the Lagoon", is an easy 11 km loop of about 45 minutes, mostly paved, with only 30 m of climbing. For a gentle holiday ride, it is the nicest option on this coast.
  • Soma Bay. Resort roads with in-resort rental (above).
  • Road cycling. The coast road south is long, hot and shared with fast traffic. Organised road rides do happen: one event organiser ran a five-day "Red Sea Tour" from Hurghada via Quseir to Wadi Lahami on 2–6 October 2024, about 400 km in total, with a bus from and to Cairo. Riding there alone is a different matter (see safety below).
  • Mountain biking. The Red Sea Mountains look tempting, but we found no operator running guided mountain-bike rides there, and going off-road on your own needs a permit (below).

Cycling safety in Hurghada

The UK government's Egypt safety advice says road accidents are common because of variable road conditions, dangerous driving and poor enforcement. It warns that driving can be erratic at dusk, when people hurry home, and advises against driving outside the main cities and resorts at night. It says nothing specific about cyclists, but the advice applies even more on two wheels.

  • Ride early. Mornings are cooler and quieter; avoid main roads at dusk and after dark.
  • Mind the heat. From May to September coast highs average 34–37.5 °C. Carry plenty of water and ride before 10:00. Our best time to go has the month-by-month weather.
  • Wear a helmet and be seen. Bring your own helmet and a light.
  • Stay on paved paths and resort roads. For any off-road trip into the desert, UK advice is to use a qualified guide and get a permit from the Ministry of Interior. That rules out a self-guided ride into the mountains.

Quad biking Hurghada: price, what to wear and what you pay in cash

Group quad rides on GetYourGuide start from about $10–17 for the bare daytime option and about $20–30 for the better-rated fixed programmes; the "from" price is the cheapest option. On top, expect some cash on the day:

  • Scarf and goggles, often around €5 each at the station.
  • Pick-up from Makadi, Sahl Hasheesh, El Gouna, Soma Bay or Safaga: many sellers add €5–15 per person.
  • On some listings, a cash "safari fee" of about €5–10 per person. Look under "Not included".
  • Photos or GoPro footage, always optional, and a small tip for the guide.

What to wear for quad biking in Hurghada: long trousers (your legs can touch the engine), closed shoes, a long-sleeved top, a buff or scarf, and sunglasses or goggles. Skip contact lenses if you can, because of the dust. Wear the helmet; the UK government says to, and some insurers make it a condition. Check that your travel insurance covers quad biking, since many policies exclude it. Our price guide and desert trip guide go into detail.
