Children under 16 cannot drive a quad in Hurghada on any trip that states an age. The family answer is usually a buggy — a parent drives, the child sits beside them — plus a short camel or horse ride.

Taking kids on a quad in Hurghada is mostly a question of age. Every quad trip that publishes a rule sets the driver's minimum at 16. So for a family with younger children, the real choice is between putting a child behind a parent on a double quad (where the seller allows it), switching to a buggy where the parent drives, or skipping motor vehicles for a camel or horse ride.
The good news is that most of what children enjoy on a desert trip — the bumpy ride out, the camp, a camel, the sunset — works fine without them driving anything. The things to avoid are the long, hot, late programmes that are built for adults.
The minimum age to drive a quad is 16 on every product that states one — the TUI hotel-desk trips run by Travco, Makadi Excursions, Safari Sahara, Headout's quad listing, and the El Gouna Dry Canyon morning ride among them. Headout's quad listing adds that drivers must pass a short driving test first. The limit is the operators' rule rather than a published Egyptian law, but every seller that publishes a rule uses the same number.
A confident 14- or 15-year-old will still be told no on a trip that follows that rule — and that is the kind of trip you want to be on.
No driving licence is asked on the quad trips we checked; operators set an age and a test lap instead. The one exception is the El Gouna Dry Canyon morning quad, which asks for a valid driving licence.
Expect a waiver
Drivers usually sign a disclaimer before riding. Read what it says about damage to the quad — as a parent you may be signing for a 16- or 17-year-old as well.
It depends entirely on the seller. Rules seen on published trips:
| Seller | Quad passengers |
|---|---|
| TUI (supplier Travco) | quad is "single use only"; under-16s book the buggy option instead |
| Makadi Excursions | children ride with an adult; self-drive from 16 |
| Safari Sahara | under-16s ride with an adult |
| Egyptra (agency) | passenger from about age 5 on a parent's quad |
So: some sellers put a child behind a parent on a double quad, others allow single riders only. Pick a listing that names a double quad or a buggy option, and check the age in that option before you pay. Some sellers price a double quad differently from a single; others simply do not offer it.
Our view: a double quad works for an older child who can hold on properly for 45 minutes on rough ground. For anyone smaller, the buggy is the better seat — it has belts and a proper seat, and the parent has both hands on a steering wheel rather than a handlebar.

A buggy is a small open off-road car with seats, belts and a steering wheel. Drivers must be 16 or 18 depending on the seller (18 on TUI's Travco trips, where no driving licence is needed), and TUI allows one passenger aged 4 or older beside the driver. An agency, Egyptra, takes buggy passengers from age 3. Children aged 0–3 cannot join TUI's trips at all.
That makes the buggy the natural family vehicle: an adult drives, a child rides alongside, and nobody has to balance on the back of a quad.

Two things to watch:
Our recommended trip is the desert dune buggy safari with optional BBQ: a buggy-only trip with morning or sunset options and a strong rating, so a parent drives and a child rides for the whole trip rather than a 15-minute taster. Check the passenger age in the option you choose.
| Age | What works | What to skip |
|---|---|---|
| 0–3 | a quiet camp dinner such as the BADU evening — ask the minimum age first | quad and buggy trips (not allowed on TUI's); long jeep legs |
| 4–5 | buggy passenger (TUI from 4); jeep trips from 4 on TUI's 4x4; a short camel ride on their own animal | a double quad — too small to hold on |
| 6–10 | buggy passenger; horse ride at stables that take 6+; camel ride | a 7-hour super safari in summer |
| 11–15 | buggy passenger or double-quad passenger where offered; horse rides; stargazing trips | driving anything — the limit is 16 |
| 16–17 | drives a quad after the test lap; may drive a buggy with sellers that set 16 | buggies on TUI trips (18 to drive) |
The combo trips need the most care. A typical "super safari" is 5–7 hours door to door, of which perhaps 30–45 minutes is on a quad and 15–30 minutes in a buggy; the rest is a jeep shuttle, the camp, a camel, dinner and a show. For a child who cannot drive the quad, that is a long day of sitting in vehicles and waiting while parents ride. The evening shows (belly dance, tanoura — the Egyptian whirling-skirt dance — and a fire show) are loud and finish after dark. Some children love it; tired ones do not. See what a super safari really includes.
For a calmer evening, the BADU Bedouin dinner and stargazing in the Makadi Bay desert has live music, traditional dance and storytelling but no belly dance, no fire show and no alcohol. More on the difference in the Bedouin village guide.

There is no standard child price. Examples from operators' own sites:
On GetYourGuide, child prices sit inside each listing's options; the "from" price is the cheapest adult option. Add the cash extras on the day: some listings add a cash "safari fee" of about €5–10 per person (look under "Not included"), and scarves and goggles are often sold at the station for around €5 each. Bring a buff and sunglasses for each child instead.
Refund rules matter more with children
A child with a temperature cancels plans at short notice. Most GetYourGuide listings refund in full up to 24 hours before; several Headout camel and horse listings are non-refundable. Check the terms before you book.
Camel and horse rides are where younger children get their own animal — and that is the point: one rider per animal. The animal-welfare guidance of ABTA, the UK travel association, says no more than one person on a camel or a horse, so a parent and child should not share (ABTA guidance). A handler leads the camel; ask for a separate camel for your child.

With children, heat is a bigger worry than speed. On the coast, July and August average about 37 °C by day, and afternoon temperatures at the camps are around or above 40 °C on many days. From May to September, choose a sunrise or sunset slot; avoid the 11:00–12:00 pick-up "super safari" whose quad leg starts around 12:30, the hottest hour. The morning ride guide explains how early a real sunrise trip leaves.
In winter the problem flips. Desert nights are about 4–5 °C colder than the coast, and from December to February half to three-quarters of them fall to 10 °C or below, so a sunset trip that ends after dark needs a fleece for every child. November to February is the comfortable range for a midday ride with small children. Month by month, see the best time for a desert trip.

Wear: long trousers (TUI's supplier warns that bare legs can touch the engine on a quad), closed shoes rather than flip-flops, long sleeves and a hat for the stops. Bring a buff or scarf against the dust, sunglasses or goggles, sunscreen, water and a warm layer from November to March. March and April are the dustiest months. Our practical guide has the full list.
Helmets: ask for one that fits your child and make sure they wear it. The UK government advises always wearing a crash helmet on quads and notes that safety standards vary considerably (FCDO safety advice).
Seat belts in the jeep: the bumpy part of many trips is the 4x4 shuttle to the camp, not the quad. On 6 September 2024, Russian tourists were injured on a jeep safari near Hurghada in a 4x4 without seat belts, one with a suspected spinal fracture. Ask for belts, and sit children where they can use one.
Papers and insurance: carry a passport copy for everyone — in that case medics hesitated because passports were at the hotel. Many UK travel policies exclude quad biking unless you add cover, and not wearing a helmet can invalidate a claim. Platform bookings include no insurance; TUI's Travco trips state that activity accident insurance is included.
Listings say buggy and quad trips are not recommended for pregnant travellers or people with back problems — relevant if one parent will be staying behind with the children.

The Makadi Bay desert and beach buggy is a short 2-hour buggy trip that also runs along the coast — handy for families staying at Makadi. The desert experience with quad, buggy and camel suits families whose children are 16 or over, who can drive the quad leg; check the buggy driver age in the option (16 or 18 by seller), and whether a younger child can ride the buggy leg as a passenger.
For older children who like animals, the big horse listings combine desert and sea:

If you would rather have the desert to yourselves, a private quad or buggy trip lets you set the pace for a nervous child — but it does not change the age rules.
16 to drive, on every Hurghada quad trip that states an age. No driving licence is asked; there is a briefing and a short test lap instead. The El Gouna Dry Canyon morning quad is the exception and asks for a licence.
Sometimes. Some sellers put a child behind a parent on a double quad (one agency from about age 5); others, including TUI's supplier, allow single riders only. Check the option before booking.
Yes, if you pick the right trip. A buggy-only trip with the child as passenger, or a camel or horse ride, suits children better than a 7-hour super safari. Choose sunrise or sunset slots from May to September.
From 4 as a passenger on TUI's Travco trips (one agency takes children from 3). The driver must be 16 or 18 depending on the seller — 18 on TUI's trips.
ABTA's animal-welfare guidance for the travel industry says one rider per animal, so ask for a separate camel. Handlers lead the camels at walking pace.
It depends on the seller. One station lets under-5s go free and charges half for ages 5–10; another charges adults and children the same. Pick-up supplements from outer resorts are often lower for children.
