A super safari in Hurghada sells you everything the desert has in one afternoon: a quad, a buggy or a jeep (or all three), a camel, a camp, a barbecue and a show. It is good value for a long evening out. What it is not is a long ride — the vehicles take up about an hour of a trip that lasts five to seven, and the rest is minibus, camp and dinner.

The second thing to know: "super" and "mega" are sales words. They have no fixed meaning in Hurghada, and two listings with the same name can include quite different vehicles.

What a super safari in Hurghada includes (and what "mega" means)

You ride a quad from a station in Safari Land — a desert zone of numbered sectors on the Safaga road past the airport — then switch to a buggy (a small open car with a steering wheel and seat belts, called a "spider car" on some listings), or climb into a 4x4 jeep for the drive out to a camp 15–35 km inland.

What the main super and mega safari listings include:

Listing Trip Quad Buggy Jeep Camel Dinner + show
Super Safari Adventure 7 h yes yes ("spider car") not named yes BBQ buffet + show
Mega Safari with 4x4 5 h yes no yes yes yes
"5-in-1" safari 5–6 h yes yes yes yes BBQ + show
Jeep Safari with ATV and buggy 5–7 h yes yes yes yes optional
Makadi Bay Mega Desert Tour 6 h about 45 min check yes yes check
Super Safari with Sunset 6 h yes, out and back no no yes, at sunset BBQ + show
Headout desert safari 7 h yes yes yes yes Bedouin dinner + show

So a "Super Safari" can be quad and camel only, and a "Mega Safari" can have no buggy. If you want to try all three vehicles, only a few packages promise it: the "5-in-1", the jeep safari with ATV and buggy, the Headout listing, and the Super Safari that Scorpion Safari sells on its own site.

How long you really ride on a super safari

The trip is long; the riding is short. The figures that operators and sellers publish for their own combo trips:

Trip Total length At the controls
Scorpion Safari's Super Safari (own site) pick-up 11:00–12:00, back after dinner quad 30–45 min, buggy about 30 min
A 7-hour super safari sold by a local agency 7 h quad "1 hour"
Makadi Bay Mega Desert Tour 6 h quad about 45 min
TUI's quad, 4x4, buggy and dinner trip (supplier Travco) 8 h quad about 45 min
A Sahl Hasheesh "fun safari" sold by a Dutch agency 6 h quad 30 min, buggy 15 min

Put together, a super safari gives you roughly 30–60 minutes on a quad and 15–30 minutes in a buggy. The jeep leg is about 25 km each way on Scorpion's programme, and you are a passenger. The camel ride inside a combo lasts anything from two minutes to half an hour.

The price covers transfers, a meal and a show. If the quad is the point of your day, a quad-only trip gives as much riding for less; see quad tours from Hurghada.

A typical super safari day, hour by hour

The classic super safari leaves before lunch so that the camel ride meets the sunset. Scorpion's published Super Safari runs like this; others are similar.

A typical super safari (order and timings vary by seller, season and hotel)
  1. Pick-up at your hotel by minibusMakadi and Sahl Hasheesh 25–30 min, Hurghada 40–45 min, El Gouna, Soma Bay or Safaga up to 1 h

  2. Arrival at the safari station in Safari LandScarves and goggles on sale; ask for a helmet

  3. Safety briefing and test lap, then the quad leg30–45 minutes in a convoy behind a guide

  4. Buggy legAbout 30 minutes

  5. Jeep out to the camp, about 25 kmYou are driven; ask for a seat with a belt

  6. Tea, bread-making, a herb "pharmacy" with herbs for sale, souvenir standNothing here is compulsory

  7. Camel rideShort; one rider per animal

  8. Buffet dinner, then the showBelly dance, tanoura, fire show

  9. Jeep back to the station, minibus to the hotelAbout 7 hours after pick-up on a 7-hour trip

Pick-up times are confirmed the day before by WhatsApp or e-mail. From El Gouna, Soma Bay or Safaga, expect up to an hour of minibus each way.

The show is cabaret, not Bedouin tradition. Tanoura is the Egyptian whirling dance in a weighted, multicoloured skirt; belly dance and fire tricks are added for tourists. The "Bedouin village" is a camp built for the programme. If you want a quieter evening with no belly dance or alcohol, look at BADU Camp and the Bedouin village evenings instead.

Super safari Hurghada price: what you pay online and in cash

Online, the main super and mega safari listings start from about $22–30 per person, and the bigger, higher-rated quad and buggy combos from about $37–47. That "from" price is the cheapest option of the listing — check that the option you pick includes dinner and the show.

For comparison, Scorpion Safari lists its Super Safari at $35 per adult and $17 per child on its own site, with outer-resort transfers, photos and the scarf excluded. On musement.com, TUI's activity platform, the 8-hour quad, 4x4, buggy, camel, dinner and show trip supplied by Travco started from £59 when we checked; it includes activity accident insurance and a full refund up to 24 hours before.

On the day, budget a little cash on top:

  • Outer-resort pick-up: prices usually cover Hurghada hotels; from Makadi, Sahl Hasheesh, El Gouna, Soma Bay or Safaga many sellers add €5–15 per person, often in cash.
  • "Safari fee": some listings add a cash fee of about €5–10 per person — look under "Not included" before you book. We found no official source for it.
  • Scarf and goggles: often sold at the station for around €5 each. Bring your own buff and sunglasses.
  • Photos and video: optional; you can say no.
  • Tips: a modest cash tip in small notes for the guide and driver; nothing is compulsory.

Lowest price per person in US dollars, checked on 20 October 2026. The programme is comparable, but the operator, camp, riding time, pick-up area and what is included can differ: open each listing before you pay.

The Headout trip is cheaper on paper, but it adds a €7 per person "safari admission" fee in cash and €5–15 for pick-ups from Makadi, Sahl Hasheesh, Safaga or El Gouna, and it has no reviews yet. The operator, camp and riding minutes may also differ between the two. More on fees in the Hurghada desert trip prices guide and on the channels in GetYourGuide vs Headout vs the hotel desk.

Mega safari Hurghada: the listings compared

Our pick, the Super Safari Adventure with ATV, camel and BBQ, is the most-reviewed listing sold as a super safari (4.6 from more than 2,000 reviews) and among the cheapest. It names a quad and a "spider car" but no jeep — fine if you want to drive both vehicles. A local agency resells a trip with a near-identical title at the same price and lists one hour on the quad; GetYourGuide shows the operator's name on the listing page, so check it before you book.

If the jeep matters more than the buggy, the Mega Safari with 4x4 jeep rates a little higher (4.7) on fewer reviews. For all three vehicles in one evening, the "5-in-1" safari has the most reviews of the full packages. From Makadi Bay, the Mega Desert Tour is the one listing that states the quad time (about 45 minutes).

The best-rated combo on GetYourGuide is a shorter quad-and-buggy trip with a fixed programme: the desert experience with quad, buggy and camel rates 4.8 on more than 2,000 reviews, at a higher price. It has the same programme as Scorpion Safari's Discovery tour; GetYourGuide shows the operator's name on the listing page.

Midday heat, sunset and the time of year

The 11:00–12:00 pick-up puts the quad leg at about 12:30, the hottest hour of the day. From May to September that matters: average daily highs on the coast are about 37 °C in July and August, and the camps inland are around or above 40 °C on many afternoons. In summer, choose a version that starts riding after 15:00 or an evening-only desert safari, and carry water.

From November to February the midday ride is pleasant, but the evening is not warm. Desert nights are about 4–5 °C colder than the coast, and on roughly half to three-quarters of December–February nights the camps drop to 10 °C or below. Bring a fleece for the jeep ride back.

Sunset moves the whole programme. It comes at about 17:00 in December and close to 19:45 in early July, so in winter you eat in the dark early and in summer dinner starts around 20:30. Egypt changes its clocks on the last Friday of April and the last Thursday of October, and sunset jumps by an hour overnight — check the pick-up time again if your holiday spans the change. Month by month detail is in the best time for a desert trip.

March and April are the dustiest months, with blowing sand on seven or eight days each month.

Is a super safari safe? Age limits and who should skip it

The UK government's travel advice is blunt: there have been several serious quad bike accidents involving British nationals in resort areas, safety standards vary considerably, and you should always wear a crash helmet (FCDO). Ask for a helmet and wear it; some insurers make it a condition. Many UK travel policies exclude quads, so check yours before you go.

The rules on these trips:

  • Quad: drivers must be 16 or older; no driving licence is asked, just a short test drive.
  • Buggy: drivers must be 16 or 18 depending on the seller (18 on TUI's Travco trips); children from 4 can ride beside an adult on Travco's trips.
  • Jeep: you are driven. The jeep leg on corrugated tracks is the part operators flag for back problems. On 6 September 2024 Russian tourists were injured on a jeep safari near Hurghada; the vehicle had no seat belts and one passenger had a suspected spinal fracture. Ask for a seat with a belt.
  • Who should skip it: the agency version of the 7-hour super safari excludes over-65s, pregnant women and people with back problems. Listings say quads are not suitable in pregnancy.

Expect to sign a waiver — read what it says about damage to the quad. For a family, a buggy-based trip lets a parent drive with a child alongside; see desert trips with children.

Super safari vs quad-only or buggy-only: which to book

Pros

  • One trip covers the quad, the buggy or jeep, the camel, sunset and dinner
  • Cheap for what is included, from about $22
  • Good for a mixed group where not everyone wants to ride

Cons

  • Only 45–75 minutes at the controls in 5–7 hours
  • Midday start puts the quad leg in the summer heat
  • Loud, staged show and sales stops at the camp
  • Long minibus time from El Gouna, Soma Bay or Safaga

Book a super safari for one long afternoon and evening that covers everything, with the riding as part of the show. Book a quad-only trip if you want to ride: a sunrise or sunset quad gives similar riding time in 2–3 hours. Book a buggy tour if you want an hour behind the wheel — buggy-only trips give about 60–90 minutes. And if the mountains are the point, a real jeep trip to the canyons or Gebel Qattar is a different product with more driving and fewer shows.

Super safari Hurghada: common questions

What is a super safari in Hurghada?

A 5–7 hour desert package that combines a quad ride with a buggy and/or a jeep leg, a camel ride, a sunset at a Bedouin-style camp, a buffet dinner and a show.

What is the difference between a super safari and a mega safari in Hurghada?

There is no fixed difference. Some "super" safaris have a quad and a buggy but no jeep; some "mega" safaris have a quad and a jeep but no buggy. Check the itinerary for the vehicles you want.

How much is a super safari in Hurghada?

Online listings start from about $22 per person; the higher-rated quad and buggy combos start from about $37–47. Add cash for scarf and goggles, tips, and €5–15 pick-up from outer resorts; some listings also add a €5–10 "safari fee".

How long do you ride a quad on a super safari?

Usually 30–60 minutes on the quad and 15–30 minutes in a buggy, inside a trip of 5–7 hours. Ask the operator for the riding minutes before you book.

Can children go on a super safari in Hurghada?

Children can come, but they cannot drive a quad until they are 16. On many trips a child rides as a buggy passenger next to an adult (from age 4 on TUI's trips). Scorpion's own price list charges half price for children aged 5–10 and nothing for under-5s.

Is the super safari in Hurghada worth it?

Yes, if you want a long evening with dinner and a taste of each vehicle. No, if you mainly want to ride: a quad-only trip gives similar riding time for less money, and a buggy-only trip gives more time at the wheel.
