Where to book Hurghada excursions: GetYourGuide, Headout, hotel desk or agency

For most Hurghada desert trips, GetYourGuide gives the widest choice and the clearest refund rules. The TUI hotel desk costs more but includes accident insurance. Headout looks cheapest until you add its cash fees, and street sellers give you nothing in writing.

You can book the same afternoon in the desert in five ways: on GetYourGuide, on Headout, at your hotel's tour-operator desk, through a local agency on WhatsApp, or from a man on the beach. The trips often end up at the same safari stations on the Safaga road, but the price, the refund rules, the insurance and the cash you hand over on the day differ a lot.

This page compares the five, with real examples. Prices are the "from" prices on the date at the top of this page; the cards and comparison boxes show today's.

The short version: book on GetYourGuide for choice and reviews, check the operator's name on the listing, and read "Not included" carefully. Pay more at the TUI desk if insurance and a simple refund rule matter more to you than price.

GetYourGuide: the biggest choice and the clearest rules

GetYourGuide is the booking agent; your contract is with the local operator named on the listing. That name is on the listing page, so check it, because the same trip can be sold under several titles. The platform collects payment for the operator, and its commission is included in the price you see.

What you get:

  • Free cancellation by default: cancel more than 24 hours before the start for a full refund. A listing can set different terms, so read its cancellation line.
  • Reserve now, pay later on selected listings: your card is checked at booking and charged 72 hours before the trip.
  • Weather refunds: if the operator cancels for bad weather, the booking price is refunded.
  • Reviews only from people who booked: operators may not write or pay for reviews.
  • Customer service by phone, chat or email, which usually replies within 24 hours.

What you do not get:

  • No insurance. GetYourGuide does not operate tours or verify safety standards. Its rules ask operators for insured vehicles and helmets and seat belts in good condition, but it does not inspect them.
  • No guarantee of the lowest price. Its price match covers only the identical trip with the same operator.
  • A neutral ranking. The order of results is based partly on the commission operators pay, so sort by reviews and read the listings, not just the top result.

For Hurghada quads it is by far the deepest market, with listings that carry thousands of reviews. The quad tours guide explains how to read a listing (riding time, options, pick-up), and our GetYourGuide guide ranks the top listings.

Headout: new listings, low prices, cash fees

Headout's Hurghada desert trips are new and nearly unreviewed; add the cash fee before comparing. It lists 16 desert products for the area, most added in the last few months: four quad, buggy and jeep combos, a jeep stargazing trip, two camel rides and nine horse rides. Only a few have any reviews, eight at most. Headout does not name the operator on these pages.

The fine print matters more here:

  • Cash fees on the day. Several of its desert listings add a "governmental safari fee" of €7–10 per person, payable in cash, plus pick-up from outer resorts at €5–15 per person. We found no official source for the safari fee.
  • Refunds depend on the listing. Headout's general terms allow no refund unless the listing says so. Most desert trips allow free cancellation up to 24 hours before, but the 4x4 stargazing trip and several camel and horse rides are non-refundable. Refunds are paid after the supplier refunds Headout.
  • Weather is not covered by Headout's own guarantee.
  • Pay later only when you book at least four days ahead.
  • Room numbers. Several listings ask for your hotel room number.

Here is the clearest example of why the headline price misleads:

Price check Quad ride, camel ride and a Bedouin village visit on two platforms Difference: $11
PlatformListingRatingPriceWhere
Headout Hurghada Quad Bike Desert Safari and Camel Ride With Hotel Transfers and Bedouin Village Visit · 4 h 5.0 (1) $6 Lowest See on Headout
GetYourGuide Desert Quad ATV, Bedouin Village & Camel Ride with Optional BBQ · 3 h 4.5 (292) $16 See on GetYourGuide

Lowest price per person in US dollars, checked on 20 October 2026. The programme is comparable, but the operator, camp, riding time, pick-up area and what is included can differ: open each listing before you pay.

Headout's quad, camel and Bedouin village trip shows $5.50, but the page adds about €10 per person in cash for the safari fee, and another €10 per person if you are collected from El Gouna, Safaga, Soma Bay, Makadi or Sahl Hasheesh. The GetYourGuide trip has a few hundred reviews, and the Headout one has a single review. Headout is worth a look from a central Hurghada hotel if you are happy with an unreviewed trip, but do the sum first.

TUI and other hotel desks: dearer, but insured

TUI sells its Hurghada desert trips through Musement, its activity platform, and every desert trip we checked names the same supplier: Travco Group for Tourism, a large Egyptian travel group. Travco is TUI's supplier, not a separate desk. The same Travco trips are sold by easyJet holidays and some other tour operators.

Prices on musement.com (TUI's activity platform), all in pounds:

Travco trip Length From
Quad ride with Bedouin tea 4 h £31
Morning dune buggy (per buggy, 2–4 people) 4 h £42
Evening sand buggy 4 h £51
Morning safari: quad, buggy, 4x4 and camel 6 h £50
Quad, 4x4, buggy, camel, Bedouin dinner and show 8 h £59
Sunset and stargazing by 4x4 with dinner 7 h £67

TUI's own country sites showed different "from" figures on the same day, probably another ticket type or channel. Treat these as a guide and ask the desk for the written price, including pick-up.

What the TUI channel gives you that the platforms do not:

  • Accident insurance that covers you during the activity.
  • A 100 % refund up to 24 hours before, and card payment.
  • Clear rules: quads are single-rider and for drivers aged 16 or over; buggy drivers must be 18, with one passenger aged 4 or over; children aged 0–3 cannot join.
  • Guides in English, Italian, French, Arabic, German, Russian, Dutch and Polish (English if too few people book a language).

What you still pay on the day: pick-up from El Gouna (€8 adult, €4 child), Safaga and Soma Bay (€10 / €5) or Magic Life Kalawy Bay (€14 / €7), and scarves and goggles at around €5 each at the station. Ratings on Musement are 3.76–4.26, on 18–134 reviews, below the big GetYourGuide listings.

The UK government's advice also leans this way: "Book excursions for activities at your resort or through approved agents or tour operators" (FCDO safety advice). Other tour operators work similarly. Anex lists its Hurghada desert trips without public prices, and Itaka shows a 5-hour quad safari from about 155 PLN. Desks set their own prices, so ask for the written price including pick-up and fees. Our hotel desks review goes into each channel.

Same safari, three channels: the 5-in-1 desert trip

The big "everything" safari (quad, buggy, jeep, camel, Bedouin dinner and show) is sold on all three channels, so it shows the differences well.

Price check Mega safari: quad, buggy, jeep, camel, dinner and show on two platforms Difference: $6

Lowest price per person in US dollars, checked on 20 October 2026. The programme is comparable, but the operator, camp, riding time, pick-up area and what is included can differ: open each listing before you pay.

Three prices in two currencies; compare what each includes, not just the number. On combos like these the quad part is short, typically 30–45 minutes, with 15–30 minutes in the buggy; most of the day is the jeep ride, the camp and the show. Our super safari guide explains what is inside these combos. For a morning version, the quad, buggy and camel desert experience (4.8 from about 2,400 reviews) is comparable to Travco's £50 morning safari.

Local agencies: cash later, strict refund rules

Hurghada has many small agencies that resell the stations' trips through their own websites and WhatsApp. Some agencies take cash on the day and ask for passport photos by WhatsApp; check their refund rule (one gives nothing within three days). Examples:

  • Hurghada Excursions (company name GTT Travel & Tourism) lists a 3-hour quad from $23 and a 6-hour mega safari from $37, with a full refund up to 24 hours before and €10 per person extra from Makadi, Soma Bay or El Gouna.
  • Hurghada Lovers, in archived versions of its price list, showed a 2-hour quad with 60 minutes of riding at €20 from Hurghada and €25 from Makadi or Sahl Hasheesh, paid in cash to the guide. It asks for your hotel, room number and passport photos by WhatsApp.
  • Egypt Excursions Online sells trips with the same titles as GetYourGuide listings at the same price or more, such as a 7-hour super safari at $23, the same as this GetYourGuide super safari. Its refund rule is strict: 100 % back at least 7 days before, 50 % at 3–7 days, nothing within 3 days.

Agencies are not cheaper than the platforms for the same trip. A €20–25 two-hour quad sits beside a well-rated $17 Makadi Bay quad on GetYourGuide. Their real advantages are paying cash later and arranging private options by message. None of them publishes a licence number, and Egypt has no public register of desert-safari companies. Our local agencies review has the details.

Street sellers and beach touts

The UK government warns visitors to be cautious in tourist areas, where scammers and touts sometimes target foreign nationals. Egypt's tourism authorities advise checking the company's licence and asking for an official contract and receipts.

The practical problem with paying cash to someone on the beach is simple. There is no platform refund if the trip is cancelled, nothing in writing about what is included (the safari fee and pick-up supplements are where totals grow), no insurance statement, and you do not know which station you are going to. If you like a seller's offer, ask for the company name, a written programme and a receipt, and check the company before you pay.

Hurghada excursions prices compared

Across GetYourGuide, a group quad starts at about $10, buggy-only trips at about $45, and the quad, buggy and jeep combos at about $22–52. Here is the ladder by type of trip, from our count of GetYourGuide listings:

What a desert trip costs, by type

Per-person prices in US dollars from listings with at least 10 reviews, checked on 20 October 2026. Bar: cheapest to typical price.

Two things make these prices hard to compare between channels. The "from" price is always the cheapest option, often the daytime ride from a Hurghada hotel without dinner. And the cash extras (outer-resort pick-up, scarf and goggles, sometimes a safari fee) are added differently on each channel. Our price guide breaks down what you pay where, and the resorts guide lists pick-up supplements resort by resort.

How to book Hurghada excursions without surprises

Booking a desert trip without surprises

  1. Decide what you want: riding time, or the camp, dinner and show. Ask how many minutes you spend on the quad, not how many hours the trip lasts.
  2. Check who runs it. On GetYourGuide the operator's name is on the listing page; compare it with our operator reviews.
  3. Read "Not included": safari fee, pick-up from your resort, scarf and goggles, photos, tips.
  4. Read the cancellation line. Note whether the trip is refundable and until when.
  5. Get the pick-up time from your resort in writing. Sellers confirm it the day before by WhatsApp or email.
  6. Check that your travel insurance covers quad biking. GetYourGuide includes none, and Headout's desert listings that mention it exclude it.
  7. Bring small notes in euros, Egyptian pounds or dollars for the extras.

Hurghada excursions FAQ

Is it cheaper to book Hurghada excursions online or at the hotel?

Online is usually cheaper. GetYourGuide's desert trips start from about $10, while TUI's Travco trips on musement.com run from £31 to £67. The desk price includes accident insurance and a 24-hour refund, which the platforms do not.

Are TUI excursions in Hurghada worth it?

They are worth it if insurance and a simple refund rule matter most to you, or if you want a guide in your language. They cost more, ratings on Musement are 3.76–4.26, and outer-resort pick-ups and scarf and goggles are still extra.

Is GetYourGuide safe for booking Hurghada excursions?

GetYourGuide is the booking agent; your contract is with the local operator named on the listing. You get free cancellation up to 24 hours before on most listings and reviews only from people who booked. It includes no insurance and does not inspect operators, so check the operator's name and your own insurance.

Why is Headout so cheap for Hurghada desert trips?

The headline price leaves out cash extras. Several of its desert listings add a safari fee of €7–10 per person in cash and €5–15 per person for pick-up from outer resorts. The listings are also new, with few or no reviews.

Can I pay for Hurghada excursions in cash?

Yes, through local agencies, which often take cash to the guide on the day. Get the price, the programme and the refund rule in writing first. Some agencies ask for passport photos by WhatsApp, and one refunds nothing within three days.

Should I book a desert safari from a street seller in Hurghada?

It is the riskiest way. You get no refund route, nothing in writing and no idea which station you are going to. The UK government advises booking through your resort or approved agents and tour operators.
