A quad tour in Hurghada is the classic half-day away from the pool: a minibus collects you from your hotel, you ride a single-seat ATV in a guided convoy across the Eastern Desert to a Bedouin-style camp, drink tea, sit on a camel for a few minutes and ride back. It is good fun, it is cheap, and it is also shorter on the handlebars than most listings suggest.

Below: where the rides go, how many minutes you spend at the controls, which listings are worth the money and what the price leaves out. Prices in the text are GetYourGuide's "from" prices when we checked; the cards show today's.

Where Hurghada quad tours start: Safari Land and the desert camps

Hurghada's desert trips are run from fixed "safari stations" on the desert edge; each group rides out behind a guide who knows the tracks. Most of the stations sit in Safari Land, a strip of garage-style safari stations in numbered sectors on the Hurghada–Safaga road (route 11), south-west of the airport and about 14 km in a straight line from downtown Hurghada (El Dahar). It is a commercial zone, not a park or a reserve.

From the station you ride to a camp 15–35 km further into the desert, the "Bedouin village" of the listings. On mass-market trips it is a stop built for the programme: tea, flatbread, a short camel ride, a herb stand, and in the evening a buffet and a show. It is a Bedouin-style camp, not a village where people live; our Bedouin village guide explains the difference.

Two areas work differently:

  • The Makadi side. Makadi-titled trips may start from a station on the Makadi side or from the Safari Land stations past the airport. The pick-up time tells you which.
  • El Gouna. El Gouna has its own motocross and ATV track (Motoclub), private rides only. Cheap group quads sold to El Gouna hotels drive 40–60 minutes south to a Hurghada station. See our El Gouna page.

The mountains on the horizon are the Red Sea Mountains. They are a backdrop, not a destination: no 1–3-hour quad ride reaches Gebel Shayeb el-Banat or Gebel Qattar, which lie roughly 40–60 km west. Only full-day jeep trips go there.

"Sea view" in a title usually means seeing the sea from a ridge; the standard loops run inland. A few listings do ride along the coast, such as a Makadi Bay sea-and-desert quad.

How long you ride on a quad tour in Hurghada

A listing's duration is door to door: pick-up, the drive to the station, briefing, the camp stop, the drive home. The riding part is much shorter. Ask how many minutes you spend on the quad, not how many hours the trip lasts. Trips that publish their riding time:

Trip Total time Time on the quad
Scorpion Safari's Discovery morning tour (own site, $35) 3 h 30 min quad + 15 min buggy
Safari Sahara's "Top Offer" quad (own booking site, €15) 2–3 h about 20 min each way
TUI's morning quad with camel and tea (supplier Travco) 3 h 1 h 30 min
TUI's private premium quad (Travco) 4 h about 90 min (45 out, 30 at the camp, 45 back)
A local agency's 2-hour Hurghada quad 2 h 60 min
Sunrise quad and camel on GetYourGuide 3–5 h "2-hour quad"
Headout's quad, camel, stargazing and dinner evening trip with transfers "guided 2-hour quad ride"
A "super safari" combo 5–7 h 30–45 min quad + 15–30 min buggy

Some listings give a distance instead: the desert quad with Bedouin village and camel advertises a 40 km quad ride in a 3-hour trip, which fits a ride out to a camp and back. Claims of 50 km or more on a short trip are marketing, not measured routes.

The cheapest option-menu listings ($10–17) do not state riding time; comparable trips give 40–60 minutes on the quad, so ask before you pay. Titles mix the two kinds of time: "1-hour quad" is usually riding, "3 hours" the whole trip. Our quad trips by length page sorts the listings by what they give you.

Quad biking Hurghada price: what's included and what you pay in cash

Quads are the cheapest desert trip from Hurghada. Of the 40 quad listings we counted on GetYourGuide for the area, the cheapest started at about $10 and the median at $20; half of all quad reviews sit on listings at about $17 or less. Private El Gouna motocross tops out above $130. Our price guide has the full ladder.

Why the cheapest listings look so cheap

About ten cheap quad listings carry near-identical descriptions (sunrise with breakfast, daytime, or sunset with dinner and stargazing, plus add-ons): one option menu sold under many titles. The "from" price is the cheapest option, usually the bare daytime ride from a Hurghada hotel. Dinner, stargazing, GoPro and Makadi pick-up raise it at checkout.

The ratings show a pattern: those $10–17 menus rate 4.1–4.4, while listings with a fixed programme at $23–53 rate 4.7–4.9. The reason is not proven, but a few dollars more for a listing that says exactly what you get is usually well spent.

Direct prices for comparison

Makadi Excursions lists its 2-hour Makadi Bay quad at €15 on its own site, pick-up from Hurghada, Sahl Hasheesh and Makadi included. Scorpion Safari lists its quad safari at $35 for adults, about an hour's ride each way, without pick-ups from El Gouna, Safaga, Sahl Hasheesh or Makadi. On musement.com (TUI's activity platform), the Travco 4-hour quad ride with Bedouin tea is from £31, with accident insurance included. Different trips, different currencies: compare what each includes.

The cash extras

  • Pick-up from outer resorts. Prices usually cover Hurghada hotels; from Makadi, Sahl Hasheesh, El Gouna, Soma Bay or Safaga many sellers add €5–15 per person, often in cash on the day.
  • Scarf and goggles. Often sold at the station for around €5 each. Bring your own buff and sunglasses.
  • A "safari fee". Some listings add a cash "safari fee" of about €5–10 per person; we found no official source for it. Look under "Not included" before you book.
  • Photos and GoPro. Optional add-ons; you can say no, and prices vary widely. Ask before the ride starts.
  • Herbs and souvenirs. The camp stop usually includes a sales pitch; nothing is compulsory.
  • Tips. A modest cash tip in small notes for the guide and driver; nothing is compulsory.

Cash extras are mostly quoted in euros, but Egyptian pounds and dollars work too. Bring small notes.

Headout's Hurghada desert trips are new and nearly unreviewed; add the cash fee before comparing. The closest pair:

Lowest price per person in US dollars, checked on 20 October 2026. The programme is comparable, but the operator, camp, riding time, pick-up area and what is included can differ: open each listing before you pay.

The Headout price looks far lower, but its listing adds a cash "safari fee" of about €10 per person, plus €10 per person for pick-up from El Gouna, Safaga, Soma Bay, Makadi or Sahl Hasheesh. From an outer resort the gap can disappear. The GetYourGuide trip has a few hundred reviews; the Headout one has one.

Hurghada quad bike tours compared: which listing to book

GetYourGuide is the booking agent; your contract is with the local operator named on the listing page, so check that name. By default you can cancel for a full refund up to 24 hours before (some listings set other terms), and some offer "reserve now, pay later", charging your card 72 hours before.

Desert quad, ATV, camel ride and optional BBQ is our pick for most first-timers: the most-reviewed quad listing in Hurghada (4.9 from about 3,800 reviews), from about $29, 3–4.5 hours with a camel ride and an optional barbecue. GetYourGuide shows the operator's name on the listing page; check it.

Makadi Bay ATV tour is the best-rated cheap ride (4.7 from over 3,000 reviews), from about $17. Its 2 hours include the transfers, so the riding is short. Our Makadi Bay page has the alternatives.

Desert quad with camel ride and optional GoPro is sold by Quad Tour Safari (4.4 from about 2,900 reviews), from about $16. Its description talks of about two hours on the quad; the camel ride is a two-minute photo stop and the GoPro footage costs extra. Pick-up takes 25–30 minutes from Makadi or Sahl Hasheesh and 40–45 from Hurghada. See our Quad Tour Safari review.

Desert quad adventure with hotel transfers rates 4.9 from about 1,200 reviews, from about $22.50, for 2–3.5 hours, with dinner and a show as options: a good shorter pick. Check the operator's name on the page.

Desert quad, Bedouin village and camel commits to a distance, a 40 km quad ride in about 3 hours, from about $16, rated 4.5. Worth a look if you want a ride rather than a photo stop.

ATV safari to Sand Mountain costs about three times as much, from about $53, shared or private, 2–3 hours, rated 4.8. The listing does not say where the "sand mountain" is; ask. For more private options see private quad tours.

The driver must be 16 on every quad trip that states an age. No driving licence is asked, except on the El Gouna Dry Canyon quad; operators set an age and a short test drive instead. Expect to sign a waiver, and read what it says about damage to the quad.

Single or double quad. Some sellers offer a double quad (passenger behind the driver) at a different price; others allow single riders only, as on TUI's Travco trips. The passenger gets the dust and bumps without the steering, fine for a short ride but no fun for a nervous partner.

A buggy suits couples and families better. Car-style seats, belts and a steering wheel: one drives, the other sits beside them. Buggy drivers must be 16 or 18 depending on the seller (18 on TUI's Travco trips), and Travco takes one passenger aged 4 or over. See our buggy guide.

Children. Under-16s cannot drive a quad. Pick a listing that names a double quad or a buggy option, and check the age in that option; our quad tours with kids page has the rules. Listings say quads are not suitable for pregnant travellers or people with back problems, and they are not wheelchair accessible.

Sunrise, daytime or sunset quad biking in Hurghada

Sellers run three slots: sunrise, daytime and sunset or evening. The month decides.

  • May to September: choose sunrise or sunset. Coast highs average 34–37.5 °C, and the camps inland are a few degrees hotter by day. Avoid the "super safari" that collects you at 11:00–12:00 and puts you on the quad around 12:30, the hottest hour.
  • November to February: midday rides are comfortable (coast highs 22–28 °C). Desert nights are about 4–5 °C colder than the coast, so bring a warm layer for sunset trips.
  • March and April: warm, and the dustiest months. Goggles and a scarf matter most.

A real sunrise ride needs a pick-up 60–90 minutes before sunrise, before 05:00 in June and July; sunset rides collect you 2–3 hours before sunset, which moves from about 16:51 in early December to 19:44 in early July. Egypt's clocks go forward on the last Friday of April and back at the end of the last Thursday of October, so a fixed departure time can be an hour off the sunset after the change. Many "morning" listings are the sunset option menu with another time slot; check the option name. Our morning quad guide covers the early slots in detail.

Quad tours from Makadi Bay, Sahl Hasheesh, El Gouna and Soma Bay

Because the stations are south of the city, Sahl Hasheesh and Makadi Bay guests are often collected later than guests in northern Hurghada, while El Gouna, Soma Bay and Safaga guests face up to an hour each way.

  • Makadi Bay and Sahl Hasheesh: 25–30 minutes to the station on shared transfers; a Sahl Hasheesh quad safari with hotel pick-up rates 4.8. Do not accept a big supplement: your transfer is shorter than from central Hurghada.
  • El Gouna: cheap group quads drive 40–60 minutes south; Motoclub's track in town is private-only, with no published prices.
  • Soma Bay and Safaga: up to an hour each way. Soma Bay's in-resort quad desk, Alex Safari (08:00–17:00), avoids the long transfer.

Is quad biking in Hurghada safe? Helmets, insurance and what to wear

Standards vary. The UK government's advice on quad bikes and desert visits says there have been several serious quad accidents involving British visitors in resort areas, and is blunt about the rest: "Always wear a crash helmet." Germany's Foreign Office says accidents are relatively frequent because vehicles are often in poor technical condition, and names quads.

In practice:

  • Ask for a helmet and wear it. The UK government advises it, and some insurers make it a condition.
  • Take the test lap seriously. If the brakes, throttle or steering feel wrong, ask for another quad before the convoy leaves.
  • Ride at the pace of the slowest rider, keep a gap, and do not race. Ask to ride near the front if you can: the back of the convoy rides through everyone else's dust.
  • No alcohol before or during the ride.
  • Ask for the licence. Egypt requires desert trips to be run by companies licensed by the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities; ask to see the licence and its expiry date.

Insurance

Many UK policies exclude quad biking or need extra adventure cover (InsureandGo's quad biking page is a typical example), and not wearing a helmet can invalidate a policy. GetYourGuide bookings include no insurance; TUI's Travco trips include accident insurance for the activity.

ATV rental in Hurghada: riding on your own

You cannot hire a quad and head into the desert alone: UK advice says off-road travel needs a qualified guide and a Ministry of Interior permit. The nearest thing to riding on your own is a track. Motoclub in El Gouna has an easy 1.2 km circuit and a 1.8 km motocross track, booked privately by WhatsApp. The El Gouna motocross listings on GetYourGuide, such as the El Gouna quad and MX bike safari, use the same wording as Motoclub's own site.

What to wear for quad biking in Hurghada

  • Long trousers. TUI's supplier warns that your legs may touch the engine.
  • Closed shoes, not flip-flops, and a long-sleeved top.
  • A buff or scarf and sunglasses or goggles. Bring your own to save buying them at the station.
  • No contact lenses if you can avoid them. Use glasses plus goggles, or daily lenses with goggles and eye drops.
  • No jewellery. Keep your phone in a zipped pocket or a mount.
  • A passport copy, small cash for extras and tips, sunscreen and water, and a warm layer from November to March.

Our desert trip guide has the full packing list, tipping and health notes.

Quad tour Hurghada FAQ

How much is quad biking in Hurghada?

On GetYourGuide, group quad tours start from about $10–17 for the bare daytime option and $20–30 for the well-rated fixed programmes; private rides run from about $50 to $135. Add cash for scarf and goggles (around €5 each), outer-resort pick-up (€5–15) and sometimes a "safari fee" of €5–10.

How long is a quad tour in Hurghada?

Most trips take 2–5 hours door to door, but the riding is shorter: usually 40–60 minutes on group trips, and about 2 hours only on listings that say "2-hour quad". Ask how many minutes you spend on the quad before you book.

Do you need a driving licence for a quad in Hurghada?

No licence is asked on most trips. The driver must be 16 or over and pass a short test drive. The El Gouna Dry Canyon quad is the exception and asks for a valid driving licence.

Can children go on a quad tour in Hurghada?

Under-16s cannot drive. Some sellers let a child ride behind a parent on a double quad, others allow single riders only. A buggy, with an adult driving and the child beside them, is often the better family choice.

Can I rent an ATV in Hurghada and ride on my own?

Not into the desert: off-road travel needs a qualified guide and a Ministry of Interior permit. El Gouna's Motoclub offers private rides on its tracks.

Is quad biking in Hurghada safe?

Guided rides are the normal way to do it, but standards vary. Wear a helmet, take the test lap seriously, ride at the group's pace and check that your travel insurance covers quad biking.

What should I wear for a quad safari in Hurghada?

Long trousers, closed shoes, a long-sleeved top, a scarf or buff and sunglasses or goggles. Add a warm layer for sunset and evening trips in winter.
