Hurghada desert safari: quad, camel, Bedouin camp and dinner show, hour by hour

A typical desert safari from Hurghada takes 3–7 hours door to door, and about an hour of it is spent driving a quad or buggy. The rest is minibus, jeep, a Bedouin-style camp, a short camel ride, a buffet and an oriental show.

The desert safari is the classic half-day out of Hurghada: a minibus collects you from the hotel, you drive a quad (and on many trips a buggy) in a guided convoy, a jeep takes you on to a desert camp, you sit on a camel for a few minutes, and the evening ends with a buffet and a show. A good desert safari Hurghada trip is a fun, social day with a lot of dust in it. It is not a long ride in empty desert, and the "Bedouin village" is a camp built for visitors.

If you mainly want to ride, start with the quad tours guide; for every vehicle in one day, see the super and mega safari page.

What a Hurghada desert safari really includes

Most safaris sold in Hurghada are built from the same six parts, in roughly the same order:

  1. Quad (ATV) leg — 30–45 minutes in convoy behind a guide, after a safety briefing and a short test drive.
  2. Buggy leg — 15–30 minutes in a two-seat "spider car" or "baggy" (both mean a dune buggy), on the combos that include one.
  3. Jeep (4x4) leg — you are driven about 25 km out to the camp and about 25 km back.
  4. Camp stop — tea, flatbread from a clay oven, a herb stall, souvenirs.
  5. Camel ride — usually a few minutes, sometimes up to half an hour.
  6. Dinner and show — a buffet, then tanoura, belly dance and often a fire act.

Scorpion Safari, the station operator that publishes its programmes in most detail, lists most of this for its Discovery morning tour: 30 minutes on the quad, 15 in the buggy, a "25 km Jeep ride" each way, tea, a camel ride and a "local herbs pharmacy".

"Super" and "mega" safari have no fixed meaning: one "Super Safari" has no jeep, one "Mega Safari" has no buggy. Read the vehicles, not the adjective. What the main evening listings contain:

How long you actually ride on a desert safari

The hours on a listing are the trip, not the ride: the hotel round, the station, the briefing, the camp, the meal and the show. Where sellers publish minutes, the pattern is clear:

  • Scorpion Safari's Discovery morning tour: 30 minutes on the quad and 15 in the buggy, inside a 3-hour trip.
  • TUI's 8-hour Ultimate Desert Experience (supplied by Travco): about 45 minutes on the quad and about 20 in the buggy.
  • A Makadi Bay mega tour on GetYourGuide: quad "for approximately 45 minutes", then the jeep.
  • A 7-hour super safari sold by a local agency: "1 hour" on the quad.

So on a combo expect about an hour at the controls in total. For most first-timers that is plenty, but compare listings on minutes: ask how many minutes you spend on the quad, not how many hours the trip lasts.

It is convoy riding at the guide's pace, usually in single file, and the rider at the back eats everyone's dust — ask to go near the front. If riding matters more than the camp, a quad-only tour or a buggy trip gives more minutes for the money.

Where Hurghada safaris start: Safari Land and the desert camps

Hurghada's desert trips run from fixed "safari stations" on the desert edge. Most sit in Safari Land, a desert zone of numbered sectors on the Hurghada–Safaga road (route 11), south-west of the airport and about 14 km in a straight line from downtown Hurghada. One Headout listing calls it "Safari Land national park"; it is a commercial zone, not a national park or reserve.

From the station the group rides, or is driven, 15–35 km further into the desert to a camp. That is the "Bedouin village", "Bedouin tent" or "Bedouin camp" of the listings. The desert itself is the Eastern Desert (also called the Arabian Desert), between the Nile and the Red Sea; some listings say "Sahara", which is wrong. The mountains on the horizon are the Red Sea Mountains, and no safari of this kind gets near them — that takes a full-day jeep trip.

Because the stations are south of the city, Sahl Hasheesh and Makadi Bay guests are often collected later than guests in northern Hurghada, while El Gouna, Soma Bay and Safaga guests face up to an hour each way. Shared minibuses take 25–30 minutes from Makadi Bay or Sahl Hasheesh and 40–45 from Hurghada. Some Makadi trips start from a station on the Makadi side instead; the pick-up time tells you which. The resorts guide has the full transfer ladder.

  11. Jeep back to the station, minibus to the hotel

  12. Back at the hotelLater from the outer resorts

Egypt's clocks go forward on the last Friday of April and back at the end of the last Thursday of October, so sunset pick-ups shift by about an hour overnight; in summer dinner moves towards 20:30. Some sellers keep fixed clock times all year, so in July a "15:00" ride runs in full heat, and super safaris with an 11:00–12:00 pick-up put the quad leg at around 12:30, the hottest hour. During Ramadan, sunset-dinner safaris coincide with iftar, when guides and drivers break their fast.

The "Bedouin village" and the dinner show: what they really are

On mass-market trips the "Bedouin village" is a stop built for the programme, not a lived-in settlement. Headout's own 7-hour listing calls its camp "a traditional-style area". Expect a fenced, decorated patch of desert with tents and benches, tea, flatbread baked on the spot, a herb "pharmacy" whose products are then on sale, souvenirs and a camel line. Some agency programmes add henna, dressing-up in traditional clothes, shisha or a show with snakes and scorpions. That last one is the kind of wild-animal performance GetYourGuide's own animal-welfare policy rules out; skip it if welfare matters to you. Nothing at the camp is compulsory to buy.

Several agencies sell trips to Sahara Park, a desert "village" of this kind; Safari Sahara says it owns it, about 20 km into the desert. TUI's Travco evening trips end at a dinner base called the "Badawya station".

The camel ride inside a combo is short: from a couple of minutes for photos to a 30-minute slot including mounting. If the camel is the point for you, book a dedicated camel ride of an hour instead. Wherever you ride, the welfare basics are simple: one rider per animal (so no parent and child on one camel), refuse a thin or lame animal, and look for shade and water where the camels wait.

The show is entertainment, not Bedouin tradition. Tanoura is the Egyptian whirling-skirt dance, performed in a weighted, multicoloured skirt: an Egyptian form of Sufi whirling, not the Turkish Mevlevi ceremony. Belly dance and a fire act are Egyptian cabaret, the kind of oriental show you also see in hotels. The buffet is usually grilled chicken or meatballs, rice, salads, bread and vegetables, with soft drinks; vegetarians should ask the operator. Do not count on beer either way, and drink nothing before you drive.

The quiet alternative is BADU Experiences, a camp in the Makadi Bay desert with live music, traditional dance, storytelling and a set Bedouin menu — no belly dance, no fire show, no alcohol, and closed on Saturdays. Its Luxury Bedouin Dinner & Stargazing is on GetYourGuide under its own name (€45 on its own site), and its village tour goes to Al Rada, which BADU calls a living Ma'aza Bedouin community. More in the Bedouin village guide and the BADU Camp review.

Desert safari Hurghada price: what the "from" price covers

A listing's "from" price is its cheapest option, usually per person — on option-menu listings often the daytime ride without dinner. Full combos with dinner and show start from about $22 on GetYourGuide (at the last check; the price boxes update themselves).

Lowest price per person in US dollars, checked on 20 October 2026. The programme is comparable, but the operator, camp, riding time, pick-up area and what is included can differ: open each listing before you pay.

Headout's from-price is lower, but add €7 per person in cash for "governmental taxes and safari admission fees", plus €5 per person for pick-up from Makadi or Sahl Hasheesh and €15 from Safaga or El Gouna. It has no reviews yet, against more than 1,300 for the GetYourGuide 5-in-1; camp, operator and riding minutes may differ.

Booking direct. Scorpion Safari lists its Super Safari at $35 per adult ($17 per child) and its afternoon Discovery tour with dinner and show at $36 ($18 per child) on its own site. Those prices exclude pick-ups from El Gouna, Safaga, Sahl Hasheesh and Makadi, photos, the scarf and the herb shopping, so they are not like-for-like with a platform price that may include your transfer. Its children's rule: under 5 free, 5–10 half price.

Hotel desk. TUI sells Travco's 8-hour quad, 4x4, buggy, camel, Bedouin dinner and show trip on musement.com (TUI's activity platform) from £59 at the last check. Dearer than the platforms, but with activity accident insurance, a written refund rule and clear age rules; outer-resort pick-up is extra, paid on site. See the hotel desks review and where to book.

What you pay in cash on the day — the extras are predictable, so bring small notes in euros, Egyptian pounds or dollars:

  • Scarf and goggles: often sold at the station for around €5 each. Bring your own buff and sunglasses.
  • Pick-up from the outer resorts: prices usually cover Hurghada hotels; from Makadi, Sahl Hasheesh, El Gouna, Soma Bay or Safaga many sellers add €5–15 per person, often in cash.
  • "Safari fee": some listings add a cash "safari fee" of about €5–10 per person. We found no official source for it, and no national-park or protected-area ticket applies here. Look under "Not included" before you book.
  • Photos and GoPro: optional add-ons with no standard price. You can say no; ask the price before the ride starts.
  • Herbs, souvenirs, drinks: the camp stop includes a sales pitch; nothing is compulsory.
  • Tips: a modest cash tip in small notes for the guide and driver is expected; nothing is compulsory.

Which Hurghada safari to book

Best all-round evening: the quad, buggy and dinner show listing, with the same programme as Scorpion Safari's afternoon Discovery tour (GetYourGuide shows the operator's name on the listing page — check it). 3–4 hours, a quad and a buggy leg, sunset, dinner and the full show, rated 4.7 from more than 1,400 reviews. Less minibus time and less midday heat than the all-day packages.

All three vehicles in one day: the 5-in-1 safari — quad, buggy, jeep, camel, BBQ dinner and show in 5–6 hours. Good value if you want to try everything once; just accept that each vehicle is a short taste.

Budget full day: the 7-hour Super Safari, quad and buggy plus camel, BBQ and show, with nearly 2,200 reviews. Cheap because it is long and shared: expect a lot of sitting, and in summer check the pick-up time so you do not ride in the midday heat.

Nobody wants to drive: the jeep safari with camel and dinner show. You are driven to the camp, ride a camel and stay for dinner and the show — fine for anyone nervous of a quad.

Quad and camp, no show: the 3-hour quad to a Bedouin village: a daytime trip whose listing names a 40 km quad route, with an optional BBQ.

The big combo safari is good for

  • First-timers who want to try a quad, a buggy and a camel in one booking
  • Groups and families who want a social evening with dinner included
  • Low prices, with the transfer from Hurghada usually included

It is not for

  • Riders who want more than an hour at the controls
  • Anyone hoping to meet a Bedouin family at home
  • People who dislike loud shows, crowds and sales stops
  • Summer midday trips, when the camps are around 40 °C

Morning, afternoon or sunset desert safari: when to go

The desert is not the beach. About 20 km inland, where the camps are, days run about 2–3 °C hotter than the coast from May to September, and nights are about 4–5 °C colder all year. In July and August, afternoon temperatures at the camps are around or above 40 °C on many days. From December to February, roughly half to three-quarters of desert nights fall to 10 °C or below, which matters on a trip that ends after dark.

So from May to September, take a sunrise ride or an afternoon trip that rides after about 15:00 and ends at sunset; avoid the 11:00–12:00 pick-up. From November to February, any slot works, midday rides are comfortable, and you need a fleece or jacket for the evening at the camp. March and April are the months with the most blowing sand, so pack goggles or a buff even if the day is mild. Month by month in the best time guide; for the sky after dinner, see sunset and stargazing.

Is a desert safari in Hurghada safe? Kids, health and what to wear

UK government advice is direct: "There have been several serious quad bike accidents involving British nationals in resort areas … Safety standards vary considerably. Always wear a crash helmet" (FCDO travel advice). The German Foreign Office also warns about the poor technical state of some vehicles. Ask for a helmet and wear it, take the test lap seriously, ride at the pace of the slowest rider, and never take a quad into the desert alone — off-road driving without a guide needs a Ministry of Interior permit.

The jeep leg deserves attention too. On 6 September 2024, Russian tourists were injured on a jeep safari near Hurghada in a vehicle without seat belts; one had a suspected spinal fracture. Ask for a seat belt in the 4x4 and sit where you can hold on. Egypt requires desert trips to be run by companies licensed by the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities; ask to see the licence and its expiry date.

Insurance: many UK policies exclude quads or need extra adventure cover, and riding without a helmet can invalidate a claim. GetYourGuide and Headout include no insurance; TUI's Travco trips include activity accident insurance.

Ages and children: you must be 16 to drive a quad on every listing that states an age. Buggy drivers must be 16 or 18 depending on the seller (18 on TUI's Travco trips), and a buggy passenger can be 4 or older on Travco. That makes the buggy the family vehicle: an adult drives, the child sits beside them. Some sellers put a child behind a parent on a double quad, others allow single riders only, so check the option. More in the kids guide.

Health: listings say quads, buggies and the jeep are not suitable in pregnancy, with back problems or poor heart health, and they are not wheelchair accessible.

What to wear and bring: long trousers (your legs may touch the hot engine), closed shoes, long sleeves, a buff or scarf, sunglasses or goggles, sunscreen, water, small cash, a passport copy and, from November to March, a warm layer. Contact lens wearers: glasses under goggles, or daily lenses with drops. Drones need prior military permission in Egypt — leave yours at the hotel. The full kit list is in the practical guide.

Desert safari Hurghada: questions and answers

How long is a desert safari in Hurghada?

Most last 3–7 hours door to door. The riding is much shorter: typically 30–45 minutes on the quad plus 15–30 minutes in a buggy on combos, about an hour in all.

How much is a desert safari in Hurghada?

Combos with quad, buggy or jeep, camel, dinner and show start from about $22 per person on GetYourGuide. Add cash for scarf and goggles (around €5 each), tips, any photos, a pick-up supplement of €5–15 from the outer resorts and, on some listings, a €5–10 "safari fee".

What is the difference between a super safari and a mega safari in Hurghada?

Nothing fixed: both are sales names for a long combo. Some "super" safaris have no jeep, some "mega" safaris no buggy, so read which vehicles the listing names.

Is the Bedouin village on a Hurghada safari real?

On mass-market trips it is a camp built for visitors, 15–35 km into the desert, with tea, bread, a herb stall and a camel ride. BADU's village tour goes to Al Rada, which BADU calls a living Ma'aza community.

Can children go on a desert safari in Hurghada?

Yes, but not as quad drivers: the minimum driving age is 16. Children can ride beside an adult in a buggy (from age 4 on TUI's Travco trips) or behind a parent on a double quad where the seller offers one. Each child needs their own camel.

Do I need a driving licence for a quad safari in Hurghada?

No. Operators set a minimum age and give a short test drive instead. The only exception we know of is the Dry Canyon quad tour from El Gouna, which asks for a licence.

What should I wear on a desert safari in Hurghada?

Long trousers, closed shoes, long sleeves, a buff or scarf and sunglasses or goggles. From November to March, bring a warm layer: the desert gets cold after dark.
