A buggy tour in Hurghada puts you behind the wheel of an open off-road car with a steering wheel, pedals and seat belts, driving in a convoy behind a guide across the Eastern Desert. Most buggies seat two side by side, so the person next to you is beside you, not clinging on behind.

The catch is the clock. On the popular quad-and-buggy safaris the buggy part is a taster of 15–30 minutes. A trip built around the buggy gives you roughly an hour to an hour and a half of driving. If the buggy is the reason you are going, book a buggy trip, not a combo with "buggy" in the title.

Buggy Hurghada: what you are actually booking

Hurghada sellers use several words for the same vehicle: buggy, "baggy", spider buggy, spider car and sand buggy. When a super safari menu lists a "spider car", that is a buggy, not a separate machine. It is usually a two-seater; some sellers also offer a single-seat buggy or a four-seat family buggy.

Most operators do not say which model they use. One Hurghada listing advertises Polaris RZR two- and four-seaters.

The trips start where the quads start. A minibus collects you from your hotel and drives 20–45 minutes to a garage-style safari station in Safari Land, a desert zone of numbered sectors on the Safaga road past the airport. From there the convoy heads inland, often to a Bedouin-style camp 15–35 km beyond the station. Makadi-titled trips may start from a station on the Makadi side instead; the pick-up time tells you which.

The desert here is the Eastern Desert (also called the Arabian Desert), even when a listing calls it the Sahara.

Dune buggy or beach buggy?

Standard station routes run inland over sand and gravel tracks. A coastal "beach buggy" is the exception, and only a few trips do it: the Makadi Bay desert and beach buggy drives the desert and coastline of Makadi Bay in a 2-hour trip, and Makadi Excursions' own spider-buggy route ends at a natural beach where you can swim. If the sea matters to you, look for "coast" or "beach" in the route description, and see the Makadi Bay guide.

A quad (ATV) is ridden astride with a handlebar throttle. It is the cheapest way into the desert and most riders are alone on it. A buggy is a small car: you sit in a seat, wear a belt and steer with a wheel. Many first-timers find it easier to control, and a couple can talk on the way. That makes it the better choice when one of you is nervous or would rather not drive at all.

The buggy does not save you from dust: it is open on all sides, and in a convoy you eat the sand of the vehicle in front. Ask to drive near the front and bring a buff and sunglasses.

The price gap is real. Quad listings on GetYourGuide mostly sit between $10 and $20 per person, while the buggy-only trips start at about $45. A quad suits a solo traveller on a budget who is 16 or older. A buggy suits couples, first-timers and parents who want a child beside them. Our quad tour guide covers the quad side in detail.

How long you drive: buggy-only trips vs buggy safari combos

The duration on a listing is door to door: transfers, briefing, stops, the camp and any dinner. The time at the wheel is much shorter, and the published programmes show how short.

  • Scorpion Safari's own Discovery AM Tour: 30 minutes on a quad and 15 minutes in a buggy inside a 3-hour trip.
  • Scorpion's Super Safari: quad 30–45 minutes, buggy about 30 minutes, plus a jeep ride, camel and dinner show.
  • TUI's morning safari (supplied by Travco): about 20 minutes of buggy and 45 minutes of quad in 6 hours.
  • A Sahl Hasheesh "fun safari" sold by a Dutch agency: 30 minutes of quad and 15 minutes of buggy in 6 hours.

Buggy-only trips are different. One reseller's spider-car listing gives about 90 minutes behind the wheel in a 3–4-hour trip, and a Makadi sunset buggy gives about an hour of driving, roughly 35 km out to a village. Where a listing does not state its riding time, the total trip is all you know: ask before you pay.

The combos are a sampler. The Desert Experience with quad, buggy and camel has the same programme as Scorpion's Discovery tour and rates 4.8 from 2,398 reviews, but plan on about 15 minutes in the buggy. If you want the mix of vehicles, a camp and a show, read our super safari guide and the desert safari guide.

Hurghada buggy safari prices

What a desert trip costs, by type
  • Super safari12 listings$22–$30cheapest – typical
  • Buggy9 listings$22–$45cheapest – typical

Per-person prices in US dollars from listings with at least 10 reviews, checked on 20 October 2026. Bar: cheapest to typical price.

On GetYourGuide the buggy-only trips run from about $45 for the 2-hour Makadi buggy, about $56 for the dune buggy safari with optional BBQ (4.9 from 129 reviews, morning or sunset), about $78 for the VIP buggy and camel trip with BBQ and stargazing, and about $95 for the sunset dune buggy safari (4.0 from 308 reviews). One newer buggy-and-dinner listing costs far more and has no reviews yet; let other people test it first.

The combos are mostly cheaper per person because the buggy part is short: the quad-buggy-camel day trip from about $45, the quad and buggy dinner show from about $37, the 5-in-1 safari with jeep, quad, buggy, camel, BBQ and show from about $26, and a similar jeep, quad and buggy safari from about $22.

Before you compare: the price shown is the cheapest option of the listing, often the daytime ride without dinner. And on buggy listings it is not always clear whether the price is per person or per buggy: check the option text, because two people in one buggy can mean one price or two.

Prices booked direct, quoted in the currency each seller uses (at the last check):

musement.com (TUI's activity platform) morning dune buggy, 4 h from £42 per buggy for 2–4 people

Direct is not automatically cheaper, and the platform price may include pick-ups a direct price leaves out. Our price guide puts every trip type side by side. Makadi Excursions publishes its programmes at https://www.makadi-excursions.com/ and Scorpion at https://www.scorpionsafari.com/.

What a buggy afternoon looks like

A typical buggy-only afternoon from Hurghada (winter times; they vary by seller)
  1. Minibus pick-up at your Hurghada hotelMakadi and Sahl Hasheesh pick-ups are often later; El Gouna, Soma Bay and Safaga up to an hour earlier

  2. Arrival at the safari station in Safari Landscarf and goggles on sale here, about €5 each in cash

  3. Briefing and a short test driveask for a helmet; the guide checks you can brake, steer and keep your distance

  4. Convoy drive into the desert60–90 minutes at the wheel on buggy-only trips, with photo stops

  5. Stop at a Bedouin-style camp: tea, bread, a short camel rideexpect a herb and souvenir pitch; buying is optional

  6. Drive back towards the station as the light goeswinter sunset is around 17:00

  7. Minibus back to the hotelhome roughly 3–4 hours after pick-up

In summer the same trip runs about an hour later on the clock, and the midday heat makes the sunset or sunrise slot the sensible one. Our sunset buggy guide has the month-by-month times, and couples should read the two-seater buggy guide before choosing an option.

Who can drive a buggy in Hurghada: ages, licence, passengers

Driver age is set by the seller, not by a national rule. TUI's Travco trips need buggy drivers to be 18; other sellers that state a limit, including a Makadi buggy seller and Safari Sahara, set it at 16. Under-16s do not drive anywhere.

No driving licence is asked: Travco says plainly that none is needed, and operators run a short test drive instead. One Travco evening buggy listing adds that "driving knowledge is needed". If you have never driven a car, take the passenger seat.

Passengers can be younger. Travco takes one passenger aged 4 or older per buggy and no children under 4; one agency takes passengers from 3. That is why the buggy is the family vehicle: an adult drives and the child sits beside them, belted in. Our kids and age limits guide goes through each vehicle.

Listings say the buggy is not recommended for pregnant travellers, people with spinal injuries or poor cardiovascular health. The jeep leg of a combo is often the bumpiest part. Expect to sign a waiver: read what it says about damage to the buggy. Travco asks for your passport and visa on its buggy trips, so carry at least a copy.

Cash extras and what to wear

Prices usually cover Hurghada hotels. From Makadi, Sahl Hasheesh, El Gouna, Soma Bay or Safaga many sellers add €5–15 per person, often in cash on the day. Some listings also add a cash "safari fee" of about €5–10 per person: look under "Not included" before you book.

Scarves (a shemagh, the wrapped desert headscarf) and goggles are often sold at the station for around €5 each; one Makadi buggy seller charges €5 for a scarf and €2 to rent goggles. Bring your own buff and sunglasses and you can skip both. Photo and GoPro packages are optional; you can say no, and prices vary widely, so ask before the ride starts.

Wear long trousers, closed shoes and long sleeves; glasses with goggles beat contact lenses in fine sand. Pack a warm layer from November to March, swimwear on the Makadi beach routes, and small notes for a modest tip (nothing is compulsory). The practical guide has the full list.

Is a buggy safari in Hurghada safe?

A buggy is more forgiving than a quad: you are belted into a seat inside a frame, with both hands on a wheel. The risk comes from speed, from the vehicle's condition and from you. The UK Foreign Office warns that safety standards on quad trips "vary considerably" and tells visitors to always wear a crash helmet (https://www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/egypt/safety-and-security). Not every listing says a helmet is included, so ask for one, and check that the belts actually work.

Check your travel insurance before you go. Many UK policies exclude quads and ATVs unless you buy extra adventure cover (example: https://www.insureandgo.com/travel-insurance/activities/quad-biking); ask in writing whether off-road buggies are covered. GetYourGuide includes no insurance; TUI's Travco trips include accident insurance for the activity.

Desert trips must be run by companies licensed by the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities. There is no public list, so ask the operator for its licence and its expiry date. On the ride itself, drive at the pace of the slowest buggy, keep your distance and do not overtake.

Booking a buggy tour in Hurghada: GetYourGuide, Headout or the hotel desk

GetYourGuide is the booking agent; your contract is with the local operator named on the listing. Most listings allow free cancellation up to 24 hours before, and some let you reserve now and pay later. The listing summaries do not name the operator for most buggy trips, but GetYourGuide shows the operator's name on the listing page: check it before you pay. The quad-and-buggy listings with Scorpion's programme are covered in our Scorpion Safari review.

Headout has a comparable quad-and-buggy evening with dinner and show. It is new, has no reviews yet, and adds "governmental taxes and Safari Land fee" (amount not stated) plus outer-resort transfers on top of the price; travel insurance is excluded.

Lowest price per person in US dollars, checked on 20 October 2026. The programme is comparable, but the operator, camp, riding time, pick-up area and what is included can differ: open each listing before you pay.

Headout is cheaper at the checkout today; add its cash fee and any pick-up supplement before you compare. The GetYourGuide trip has 1,455 reviews behind it, and the operator, camp and riding minutes may differ.

The hotel desk is the third route. TUI sells Travco's buggy trips, which cost more but include accident insurance and a written 24-hour refund rule; their drivers must be 18. Our hotel desk review and the platform comparison set the channels side by side.

Buggy Hurghada: common questions

How much is a buggy tour in Hurghada?

On GetYourGuide a buggy-only trip starts at about $45 for 2 hours on the Makadi side and runs to about $95 for the sunset dune buggy. Quad-and-buggy combos start lower, from about $22, because the buggy part is short. Check whether the price is per person or per buggy, and add cash extras such as a pick-up supplement from the outer resorts.

How long is a buggy safari in Hurghada?

The trip lasts 2–4 hours door to door for a buggy-only safari, with about 60–90 minutes at the wheel where the seller states it. In a combo safari of 3–7 hours the buggy leg is usually 15–30 minutes.

Do I need a driving licence for a dune buggy in Hurghada?

No licence is asked on the trips we checked. Sellers set a minimum age instead (16, or 18 on TUI's Travco trips) and run a short test drive before the convoy leaves.

Can children ride a buggy in Hurghada?

Yes, as passengers. TUI's Travco trips take one passenger aged 4 or older beside an adult driver; other sellers set their own limits, so check the age in the option you book. Nobody under 16 drives.

Is a buggy better than a quad in Hurghada?

For couples, first-timers and families, usually yes: you sit side by side, belted in, and steer with a wheel. A quad is cheaper and suits a solo rider who wants to drive. In both you get dusty, so bring a buff and sunglasses.

Can I hire a buggy in Hurghada and drive on my own?

Not into the desert. Tourist buggy trips are guided convoys from the safari stations, and the UK Foreign Office says independent off-road travel needs a qualified guide and a Ministry of Interior permit.
